VEC promotes reflection on education in cyber-wisdom and character during Madrid’s Science and Innovation Week
On November 12, as part of Madrid’s Science and Innovation Week, the Virtue and Values Education Center (VEC) at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria held the session “From Connection to Reflection: How to Educate in Cyber-Wisdom and Character,” led by Juan Luis Gómez Gutiérrez and Verónica Fernández, Director of the VEC.
The event became a shared space for reflection on how to guide children and teenagers in a digital environment that increasingly demands discernment, prudence, and orientation. The speakers emphasized that “educating in character, virtues, and digital responsibility is now an urgent need, especially for a generation that lives hyperconnected yet often lacks an inner compass to navigate the online world meaningfully.”
During the session, emphasis was placed on the importance of forming judgement, cultivating temperance, strengthening digital responsibility, and fostering empathy as essential pillars for personal fulfilment and social coexistence in the digital age.
The gathering was supported by several prominent figures in the field of education, including Pilar Ponce Velasco, President of the School Council of the Community of Madrid, and María José Fabre, Technical Advisor on Education to the Madrid Regional School Board. Also in attendance were Mónica Lavín, Spokesperson for Family and Social Affairs in the Madrid Assembly; Pablo Posse, Spokesperson for Education; and Miguel Rumayor, Member of Parliament for the Popular Party in the Madrid Assembly.
The speakers highlighted that collaboration among institutions, educational centers, families, and policymakers is essential to advancing an education that not only develops skills but also forms individuals capable of living with purpose.
