SEMINAR, THE FAITH-SCIENCE DIALOGUE IN EDUCATION

Universidad Francisco de Vitoria and the University of Notre Dame, in collaboration with Fundación Europea Sociedad y Educación, are organizing the seventh edition of the seminar “The Faith-Science Dialogue in Education,” aimed at science teachers (physics, chemistry, biology, and geology), philosophy teachers, and Catholic religion teachers in compulsory secondary education (ESO) and non-compulsory pre-university secondary education (Bach), without ruling out primary and university teachers who may be interested. In addition to delving deeper into these areas of study, we want to promote a learning community that generates educational proposals and disseminates them through the platforms of the Expanded Reason Institute.

The objectives of the seminar are as follows:

  • Introduce science and religion teachers to reflection on the dialogue between science and faith.
  • Help teachers incorporate the results of this reflection and the materials used in it into their subjects.
  • Establish a network of teachers and educational centers aimed at deepening this dialogue, continuing education, and developing teaching materials and resources to achieve the established goals.
  • Evaluate, develop, and share the results of the reflection and materials developed.

The activities planned for the Seminar are:

Conferences: given by speakers of great international renown in the various topics covered by the Seminar. An effort will be made to alternate the scientific approach with the perspective of faith. The objective is not confrontation but dialogue, which should be established primarily among the participants.

Activation dynamics: The aim is to encourage reflection and debate on the content presented in the presentations through videos, activities, games, etc.

Workshops: Participants meeting with the speakers and course coordinators are expected to discuss the proposed lectures and readings.

Educational workshop: With the advice of education experts, participants work as a team to develop teaching units and activities to put the seminar’s content and reflections into practice in the classroom.

“Social interaction”: Participants, speakers, and coordinators of the seminar will be able to share their experiences and discuss other issues related to their teaching vocation in an informal setting.

In relation to the objectives of the seminar, one of the issues on which we wish to place greater emphasis is the generation of educational proposals and their dissemination through the platforms of the Expanded Reason Institute. Each school can participate with three teachers, two of whom must be from the Science department (Biology, Physics, Chemistry) and one from Religion. This is important in order to achieve the project’s objectives. If three teachers are not possible, then at least one from each department is required.
