José Luis López Linares, director of the documentary “Spain: The First Globalization,” was the featured guest at the 6th UFV Communication Conference. The winner of several Goya Awards for Best Documentary Film and Best Cinematography, among others, delved into the key elements of what is already the most-watched documentary of the year.

The documentary explores aspects of the history of the Spanish Empire in an effort to counter the "Black Legend" surrounding Spain and features 39 historians from various countries. During this sixth conference on communication, issue 18 of the Journal of Scientific Research, Communication, and Man was presented. It explores the concept of globalization, how it has changed over time, and what significance the “Global Village”—a concept coined by media visionary Marshall McLuhan, a Catholic endowed with great insight into human nature and our communicative capacities and needs—holds today.

“Now is a good time to reflect on globalization, since its meaning has been distorted and transformed,” notes Daniela Musicco, director of Communication and Man. “The current idea of globalization is far removed from McLuhan’s dream of closeness among human beings and perhaps resembles an Orwellian dystopian scenario, in the style of 1984,” the professor explained.
