We’re pleased to present the upcoming course from Aula Sapere Aude, the humanities program for seniors at Francisco de Vitoria University.
This course focuses on evangelization in the Americas, one of the great missionary epics in the history of the Church. Its legacy kindled the flame of faith on the continent and became the driving force behind the education, social development, and protection of its inhabitants. The mendicant orders were the main promoters of an ethical debate regarding the conquest itself and of a manifest cultural syncretism, which refutes the most common theories of a “Black Legend” that emerged from the very beginning of the evangelical mission.
The proposed lecture series will analyze the legal and theological framework of evangelization; its key figures; the religious orders involved in this monumental task and the different ways they carried out their work; the strategies and tools they used (lengua, arte, inculturación); and the conflicts that arose with the indigenous peoples and with the Spanish military authorities.
Don't miss this 3-session seminar. We look forward to seeing you there!
