Introduction

Francisco de Vitoria University (UFV welcomes Dr. Bitao Lu, who has begun a two-year research fellowship in the field of sustainable materials at the Higher Polytechnic School.

This fellowship is funded by an MSCA (Marie Skłodowska-Curie) Postdoctoral Fellowship, awarded by the European Union. This fellowship, aimed at high-level researchers, is granted only to those with an outstanding academic record and strong potential for innovation, making it one of the most prestigious calls for proposals in the European Union for postdoctoral researchers.

A project with environmental and technological implications

His work in the development of biodegradable sponges and smart materials has been instrumental in his involvement with the BIOSUSMAT project, which aims to revolutionize phase-change materials (MCF) through the use of fungi and 3D printing technologies.

The BIOSUSMAT project aims to develop high-performance, sustainable phase-change materials (MCF) for thermal management and solar energy harvesting.

These materials, manufactured using 3D printing and mycelium—the root-like structure of fungi—offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional composite materials, overcoming issues such as leakage and flammability.

Dr. Amos Guang-Zhong Yin, a senior researcher at UFV, will guide Dr. Bitao Lu in the development and application of these advanced materials.

“This project has great potential to transform solar energy storage and thermal efficiency in buildings and industries. I am very excited to be part of such an innovative team at UFV,” says Dr. Lu.

Interdisciplinary research for a sustainable future

The collaboration between Dr. Bitao Lu and Dr. Yin as part of the BIOSUSMAT project reinforces Francisco de Vitoria University’s commitment to research focused on sustainability and technological innovation.

This project not only addresses the challenge of efficient solar energy storage but also promotes the circular economy through the use of natural biomaterials such as mycelium, offering an eco-friendly solution to today’s energy challenges. The combination of advanced technologies, such as 3D printing and bio-based materials, will enable the creation of safer, more sustainable, and high-performance thermal storage solutions, with potential applications in sectors such as construction, the energy industry, and waste management.

The collaborative work of these two researchers reinforces UFV’s commitment to research focused on sustainability and technological innovation. BIOSUSMAT will not only address the challenge of efficient solar energy storage but will also contribute to the circular economy by using natural materials such as mycelium to develop eco-friendly solutions to today’s energy challenges.
