An experiential and interdisciplinary course (3 ECTS) that fosters connections between international and local students through history, social action, and personal growth.

An internationalization program at UFV that offers local students the opportunity to develop their intercultural competence, discover new cultural and personal perspectives, and participate in a truly international environment without leaving campus.

Throughout the semester, students explore topics such as identity, values, and intercultural communication, while sharing real-life experiences with classmates from around the world.

ICARUS: Personal and Intercultural Growth Through Spanish Culture

Schedule: Wednesdays, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Target audience: Local and full-time students interested in participating alongside international exchange students.

Information about the programme

Course Structure

Module 1 – Spanish History and Culture (26 h) Lectures and cultural visits focusing on Spanish history and art, including field trips to iconic sites such as Alcalá de Henares and Salamanca.

Module 2 – Community Service (16 h) Monthly volunteer work with local organizations, in coordination with the University Outreach Department.

Module 3 – Personal and Intercultural Growth Workshop (18 h) Group activities in English designed to foster openness, empathy, and self-awareness in a multicultural setting.

Module 4 – Individual Mentoring (3 h) One-on-one sessions with intercultural mentors to support the integration process and personal reflection.

Module 5 – Independent Study (12 h) Readings, short assignments, and the creation of a final reflective portfolio.

Assessment

Active participation and attendance: 25%

Participation in and reflection on cultural and volunteer activities: 25%

Final reflective portfolio: 40%

Short assignments: 10%

You must attend at least 80% of the sessions and submit the final portfolio to pass the course.

Requirements

No prior knowledge is required. All you need is an interest in sharing, learning, and growing alongside peers from other countries. Recommended minimum English level: B1.
