The Chair of Sustainable Markets continues the Extraordinary Chair of Circular Economy in Public Market Management and is the result of an agreement between Francisco de Vitoria University and Madrid City Council, signed in December 2021 by the rector, Daniel Sada Castaño, and the delegate for Economy, Innovation, and Employment, Miguel Ángel Redondo Rodríguez. The City Council promotes trade and hospitality and encourages public-private collaboration to revitalize municipal markets, while the university reinforces its commitment to teaching and research aimed at the common good and the transfer of knowledge.
Both institutions recognize the social and economic importance of public markets and the need to move towards sustainable and circular economic models, consistent with their traditional role in healthy eating, sustainable gastronomy, the local economy, and neighborhood life. However, adapting to regulations is complex for small traders, which is why the chair has been created to help them successfully comply with the new legal requirements.
