Mission and Scope of the IIES

The Institute for Economic and Social Research (IIES) at Francisco de Vitoria University (UFV) is a research organization established in June 2000 that brings together researchers from diverse backgrounds, fields of expertise, and age groups.

Its primary objective is to advance theoretical knowledge in the humanities and apply it to the study and analysis of social reality. To this end, the IIES promotes research that examines human beings in their personal, familial, moral, and religious dimensions. Although its name includes the terms “Economic and Social,” the IIES’s scope encompasses all fields of the humanities.

IIES Activities

The IIES is dedicated to research and the training of researchers and professors, disseminating its findings through publications, conferences, seminars, and the annual “Francisco de Vitoria” conference. Its studies encompass economics, education, family studies, anthropology, psychology, history, and other disciplines. Research is conducted individually, in small groups, or as part of collective projects, while training includes thesis supervision, specialized courses, and seminars such as the Anthropological Training Series and the Permanent Seminar on Market Economy and Society.

Research Areas and Projects

Economics

It covers economic theory, methodology, econometrics, the global economy, and the teaching of economics.

Social Sciences and Humanities

Research focuses on topics related to family, anthropology, education, psychology, history, and philosophy (with a particular emphasis on the philosophy of human action, epistemology, and scientific methodology).

Ethics and Human Action

The course covers the theory of human action, ethics, political and sociological theory, and social responsibility among university students.

Practical applications

Studies on personal and social development, entrepreneurship, and the organization and governance of groups.

Educational innovation

Educational support, learning communities, teaching styles, and teaching methodologies applied to economics and other social sciences.

Related fields

Occasionally, the curriculum includes mathematics, computer science, demography, the social doctrine of the Church, and other topics related to the main areas of research.

Francisco de Vitoria Lectures

The “Francisco de Vitoria” Lectures are an annual series organized by the IIES from 2003 through 2017, in which an expert addresses a topic of special interest. Most of the lectures have been published, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge in various academic and social fields.

Over the years, the program has featured national and international experts in economics, anthropology, philosophy, ethics, history, and the social sciences, covering topics such as Latin American economics, globalization, economic behavior, anthropology and faith, economics and religion, economic thought, biology, the family, and applied ethics.

The series also covered the teaching of economics and the social sciences, the theory of human action, and anthropological-Christian perspectives on economics, featuring notable lectures by Pedro Barrajón (2012) and José Manuel Lopes da Silva Moreira (2017).

Special Seminars

Since its inception, the IIES has organized various types of seminars, including research seminars, scientific advisory seminars, outreach seminars, and seminars on current issues. Of particular note is the Permanent Seminar on Market Economy, Capitalism, and Society, which stands alone as a unique category.
