BRAIN TUMOUR LAB RESEARCH GROUP

The Brain Tumour Lab (BTL) is formed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, including Molecular and Cellular Biologists, Biotechnologists and Doctors with ample experience in basic and translational research. These researchers have direct contact with the specific problems presented by different types of brain tumours, undertaking a number of projects to further the knowledge of the biology of these tumours, using in vitro and in vivo models. They also aim to identify new therapeutic targets, diagnostic and monitoring biomarkers, and sensitivity to pharmaceuticals and strive for the evaluation and improvement of alternative treatments. Additionally, the group is entirely committed to the continuous development of its clinical personnel as well as the training of new researchers. The Lab participates in research rotation programs and includes pre-doctorate, Master’s degree students and student exchanges through various programs.

LINE OF RESEARCH:

The principal lines of research of the Group are:    

  1. Study of the biology of tumour stem cells isolated from surgical samples of patients and their use as in vitro and in vivo models for the identification of new therapeutic targets, the evaluation of response to pharmaceuticals and the development of new therapeutic approaches.
  2. Study of the biology of adult stem cells, tumour microenvironments and alterations leading to the formation of tumour stem cells.
  3. Study of the influence of metabolism and changes in metabolic profiles on the tumour microenvironment.
  4. Identification and validation of diagnostic/prognostic markers, for disease monitoringand response to treatment, using solid and liquid biopsies taken during the course of the illness.
  5. Evaluation of different approaches based on immunotherapies for the treatment of brain tumours.
  6. Evaluation of therapies based on oncolytic viruses for the treatment of brain tumours.
  7. Apply the latest advances in research into tumours of the central nervous system to clinical practice and transmit them to patients and family members.
